Chapter 2
Checklist for creating the vision
Get out of the office: As the vision is the supporting block of the business structure, the environment for creating the vision should be quiet and free of distraction. This will ensure that the mind can be creative and there are no negative influences.
Review the SWOT analysis: When creating the vision the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) should only be reviewed. Too much time spent focusing on SWOT analysis would only be a distraction. The vision process must be outward not inward looking.
Use a facilitator: The role of the facilitator is to get the team members to think outside the box, to channel the creative energy. An outside facilitator should have no pre-conceived ideas about the business and hence will not be inward looking.
Agenda: When creating the vision, which is a macro idea, do not set any agenda items or timetable, as this will inhibit the process. After the vision has been created then the mission statement and goals should be considered. The planning session should then be closed.
Documentation: Keep minutes to record the vision process and conclusion.
Communication: Communicate the vision to team members so as to strengthen the business culture.
